What is new in UHD/4K and HEVC/H.265 at International CES 2014

Ultra HD and HEVC are two of the subjects that have dominated the International CES 2014 news announcements from the broadcast/Pay TV industry vendors. Here is a round-up of what we have not reported on elsewhere.

Compression specialist ATEME announced that it has expanded its cooperation with manufacturers of UltraHD televisions and 4K capable set-top-boxes to guarantee flawless interoperability using the new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard ahead of the first deployments scheduled for 2014.  ATEME is working with the leading manufacturers of UHDTV sets, systems-on-chip (SoC) and set-top-boxes to ensure the interoperability of its TITAN encoder with their most advanced decoding solutions for UHDTV and HEVC. Various sets including those presented by LG Electronics at CES are fully compatible with the TITAN encoder. TITAN has also been successfully tested with Broadcom’s flagship Ultra HD video decoder SoC, the BCM7445, and set-top-boxes based on this SoC.

Elemental Technologies is powering 4K video processing in HEVC/H.265 and MPEG-DASH formats for leading CE device and semiconductor manufacturers at the Las Vegas show. The company’s software-based 4K HEVC video processing can be found in various demonstrations, including streaming 4K HEVC and MPEG-DASH video to tablets and set-top boxes with Akamai. Elemental 4K HEVC compatibility with hardware chipsets is being demonstrated with STMicroelectronics and Broadcom. Visitors can also see the compression technology performing real-time encoding of MPEG-DASH-compatible DivX Live for HEVC-based content that is streamed to an Android tablet.

M-GO, a pay-as-you-go digital movie and TV streaming service, which is a joint venture between Technicolor and DreamWorks Animation, announced that it has developed a comprehensive 4K streaming service to launch on Samsung UHD TVs in the spring. M-GO will kick off with a wide selection of full-length 4K theatrical hits and popular TV shows from Hollywood’s leading studios and networks to be made available to consumers once they are released digitally.
