Just when you though physical media was dead, Sony and Panasonic have announced the next-generation optical disc for archiving digital media for up to 50 years. With nearly 12% of Hard Disc Drives failing after 3 years, this could be a great solution for backing up valuable video data.

The 300GB Archival Disc are expected to hit the market in 2015 with the initial capacity later expanded to 500GB and then 1TB. The higher capacities will be achieved through signal-processing technologies including multi-level recording technology, the companies said.

“As a type of archival media, optical discs have numerous advantages over current mainstream HDD and tape media, such as their ability to be stored for a long time while still maintaining readability,” a Panasonic spokesman said. “We hope to develop demand for archives that use optical discs.”

The discs are being aimed at the professional end of the market and could be a great alternative to LTO tape.
